Samsung RF510 laptop review 2011

Samsung RF510 laptop review 2011
The new 15inch notebook, Samsung RF510 is a hub that can do everything including web surfing, streaming movies, word processing, video & photo editing and also gaming by incorporating Core i5 processor, discrete Nvidia graphics, stunning looks and a feedback keyboard. It is a versatile system which is sufficient to play HD videos and more demanding games.

Design

The device is too heavy to carry all around the whole day. However, within the house or office can be moved in a flash. The body measures 14.9inch wide, 10.1inch deep and 1.5inch tall and weighs about 5.6 pounds.

The RF510 has a shiny black aesthetic which gives it a professional look. The sleek closure tries to resist most fingerprints and is inscribed with chrome Samsung logo, also highlighted by chrome hinges, chrome lines on both the sides.

Once the lid is opened the design looks even more elegant. The matte black palmrest is very comfy and sits under the keyboard. The upper side of keyboard you can see a chrome area housing volume controls, Wi-Fi on/off button, power button with sci-fi blue glowing behind them. The speaker holes which run along the full width of the upper floor enhance the modern aesthetic. Also the screen bezel having slight dotted pattern complements the speaker holes.

Configuration

Samsung has released a couple of distinct configurations. One is RF510-S01 has Intel Core i5-460M processor that runs at 2.53GHz and Nvidia GT330M graphics along with 1GB video memory. To nosh up the CPU it has 4GB of RAM sadly no upgradation option, 5400rpm 500GB SATA hard drive. There’s also 8X DVD+/-RW DL optical drive.

The RF510-S02 includes Intel quad core Core -7-720QM processor that runs at 1.6GHz and a 640GB hard drive. The rest is same.

Display

The 15.6inch LCD glossy screen supports 1366X768 pixel resolution. Though the screen looks bright, images seem oversaturated. Coming to viewing angles, content look too bright if you are not seated level with the display. The panel’s glossiness is distracting; sometimes it’s hard to avoid your own reflection whenever other light source is around you.

Video playback is crisp and smooth regardless of what you throw at it. The Nvidia GT330M allows you to play almost everything from 720p to 1080p content without stammering.

Keyboard and Touchpad

The island-style keyboard ropes in numeric keypad. The surface of the keys are smooth, keys are spaced out neatly, however it lacks backlight. It offers strong tactile response and helps in swift typing.

The 3.5X2.3inch touchpad has pleasing matte surface and provides good feedback. You can easily navigate all around the desktop with immense accuracy and can perform gestures like pinch-to-zoom smoothly. The left and right mouse buttons works properly.

Audio and Webcam

The speakers deliver proficient sound that is sufficiently loud to occupy a room and unfettered from distortion. The bass sounds solid but the beats go tinny.

The incorporated webcam can capture the images of 0.3MP with solid quality even during low-light. Smooth video conferencing is possible on Skype. It is mounted at the middle of the top edge of the screen.

Ports and Connectivity

The model has plenty of high-speed ports. The right spine houses 2 USB 3.0 ports and Kensington lock slot. The left spine houses HDMI, VGA, speaker jack, mic jack, 2 USB 2.0 ports and Ethernet port. The USB port on left side nearer to front edge is able to charge up the gadgets even when the laptop is asleep or off.

The front lip takes in 4-in-1 card reader, unfortunately it is not spring loaded hence the memory cards protrude a bit and you need to pull out instead of ejecting.

As far as the connectivity, it supports Bluetooth 3.0+EDR and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi connections that are more than enough.

Performance

The system stays cool even after using for long hours. The configuration helps in supplying strong performance that is sufficient for demanding games and media consumption. The hard drive boots the OS briskly in just 53secs. Making use of feature called “Fast Start”, the system can wake from sleep mode in just 3secs. Also has good file transfer rate-25.3Mbps. The RF510 using Oxelon Media Encoder transcodes a file swiftly.

The 6-cell battery survives up to 2 hours 49 minutes, quite disappointing. The 802.11n Broadcom Wi-Fi card presents reasonable transfer rates.

Rather putting shutdown as default in start menu, the company has put sleep mode hence it indicates you to keep the notebook often in sleep than shutting it down. Company offers one year of warranty.

Graphics

The discrete Nvidia GT330M graphics chip turns the system powerful enough for media as well as gaming. At the recommended settings, it offers impressive frame rate. When the effects are turned high the frame rate drops and stands strong compared to category average.

Software

The laptop is bundled with applications such as CyberLink YouCam for capturing videos/ still images through webcam, CyberLink DVD Suite for playing/burning DVDs. You get utilities like Samsung Easy Content Share for streaming content to DLNA compatible devices, Samsung Recovery Solution for creating back ups or restoring when there is a problem.

Easy File Share for creating wireless connection with another system to transfer files, Easy Network Manager for managing network connections. Battery Life Extender extends life of battery by charging it to 80 percent only. Samsung Support Center bestow a menu structure for accessing utilities and applications and also access Samsung’s support staff by just a click.

Conclusion

The Samsung gives you above average performance in a fashionable and inexpensive priced package. In case if you don’t need the power of discrete graphics then Samsung RF510 is the one to be chosen which owes 15inch display, good performance, stylish looks and average battery life.
