Demy Digital Recipe Gadget for the Kitchen

By Shane McGlaun

I am a big fan of gadgets of any type really. It doesnt even have to be a gadget I really have a need for it to stoke my geek lust. In my house I cook quite frequently, typically the stuff my kids like, which means lots of Hamburger Helper. I dont mind cooking from the occasional recipe though like my grandma used to do.

Grandma had this huge box filled with old, browning index cards she had been using since the days when computers were science fiction. Today if I want a recipe, collection I dont have to resort to something as old fashioned as actually writing a recipe, I can grab something like the new Demy Digital Recipe reader.

The Demy device is kitchen-safe according to the maker, Key Ingredient, which I assume to mean it can take splashes of olive oil and the occasional sprinkling of salt. Demy has a 7-inch touchscreen and can store tons of recipes in its digital memory from the Key Ingredient website and recipes you copy and paste form other websites or type in manually. The device will ship in May for $299.

Goggles Give You Your Skiing Stats

Designed for skiers, snowmobilers, and snowboarders who actually want to know where theyre going, the new Transcend goggles from Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics look like they could be really cool if you plan on hitting the slopes this winter.

These Transcend Goggles come from Recon Instruments and Zeal Optics. They come with GPS and a display on the inside of the goggles. That display will tell you things like your coordinates, outdoor conditions, speed, altitude, total distance, the temperature and number of runs. You can even use it as a stopwatch and a clock. Itll even keep track of your progress. To get all of that fancy technology placed right in front of your eyes youll have to pay up $399. That is unless youd like the fancy set with photochromic (automatic transitioning) lenses, then its $499.

The gadget works its magic through a micro-computer which processes data from an accelerometer, gyroscope, temperature sensor and pressure sensor, providing instantaneous feedback on the HMD. Controls are accessed through three large glove-friendly buttons on the side of the goggles, and everything is built into the goggles themselves, including a rechargeable battery with up to 8 hours of run time.

CES 2011, Parrot Asteroid Car Receiver Has Android, Numerous USB Ports

This year, Parrot is going back to their music-transmitting roots with their aftermarket Asteroid car receiver. Based on Android, the Asteroid runs a heavily modified version that’s optimized for in-car use. In other words, there’s no touchscreen here. Instead, there’s a jog-dial for navigating through menus and plenty of real buttons. However, we think the Asteroid’s coolest feature is on the back– a part you’ll rarely see.

In addition to the standard RCA audio jacks for hooking up your car’s stereo system and a 3.5 mm jack for connecting your MP3 player, there are 3 high speed USB ports and 1 full speed USB port specifically for iPhone, iPod, and iPad. One of those USB ports can be used for the included GPS dongle for navigating via Parrot Maps. The other USB ports can be used for just about anything you want and Parrot tells us that the connections will be easily accessible through the glove compartment. Hook up a USB broadband stick and you’ve got Internet access in your car. Plug in your phone to charge it. Connect an external The storage device that holds your OS, programs, and data.
Learn Morehard drive and you’ve got access to your entire music collection via Parrot’s voice command.

Parrot’s voice command is truly the killer part of this device. Want to play Pearl Jam from your external hard drive? Just say, “Play Pearl Jam.” The voice recognition in the receiver will understand what you’re saying and play the specified band or song.

While the Asteroid isn’t directly connected to the Internet and doesn’t have a specific broadband plan connected to it, you can attach your own USB broadband card, then take it out later to use in your laptop.

Another interesting feature of the Asteroid is that despite its Android roots, it doesn’t have a touchscreen. Instead, all navigation takes place using buttons, a jog wheel, and voice commands. All in all, we really like what we’ve seen with the Asteroid and can’t wait to see it arrive in the U.S. this summer.
