HP Palm Topaz, Opal Tablets Leaked

Hewlett-Packard is going to launch the webOS 2.0-based HP Palm Topaz and Opal tablets, according to Engadgets source.

The Topaz is nearly identical in size to the Apple iPad, while the Opal is a bit shorter and wider than the Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Opal will have a 1,024 x 768-pixel display, and the Topaz will most likely have the same resolution.

The tablets will support multitasking that enables up to 20 apps to run simultaneously and will have access to tens of gigabytes of cloud storage space. Other known features include Tap-to-Share, which lets users easily transfer a website, document, or song from the phone to the tablet (or vice versa) simply by tapping the two devices together, Beats-branded audio, and a wireless charging docking station that can transform the device into a GPS device, alarm clock, or digital photo frame.

The Topaz will reportedly ship about three months before Opal. HPs tablets are expected to be officially released on February 9.

Update: The Topaz has a 9-inch display, whereas the Opal sports a 7-inch screen. Both tablets will reportedly include a 1.2GHz processor, a front facing camera, and three speakers. Leaked slides reveal that theOpal will be available with Wi-Fi only and with Wi-Fi + 3G.

Were told that units will start to arrive at Palm HQ in June as production ramps up for launch later this year a timeline backed up by an internal marketing slide we received that lists WiFi-only, AT&T 3G, and Verizon LTE versions of theOpal arriving in September 2011, and on AT&T LTE in July 2012, Engadget reports.

MiTAC Plans 4 Tablets with Integrated GPS

MiTAC is better known for making GPS systems and mobile entertainment devices than full-fledged tablet computers. But according to SoftPedia, MiTAC will be showing off four new Android tablets at CeBIT in Germany next week.

The first two are 7 and 10 inch Android tablets featuring Google Android 2.3. Both will features 1080p HD video support and HDMI output as well as built-in GPS, which should come as no surprise given their pedigree. These tablets will be called the Valar 7 and Valar 10, respectively.

MiTAC also has a 7 inch ruggedirzed Android tablet called the Ulmo which will feature a waterproof casing.

The final tablet is a smaller model called the Zeus which features a 7 inch display and dual GPS receivers, which apparently offers some sort of enhanced GPS capability.

Theres no word on how much MiTACs new tablets will cost.

New ARCHOS 101 Tablet Review and Price

The Archos 101 is the 10-inch tablet Android needed in 2010. Thin, light and affordable priced at $ 319 (8GB) and $ 365 (16GB), the Archos 101 is the first decent Android 2.2 presentation weve seen on a screen iPad format.

Unfortunately, Archos timing is terrible. The 10-inch tablets making headlines these days are all running Android 3.0 (honeycomb) and the Archos 101 is making no promises to support the latest, greatest OS from Google. Still, if youre looking for a 10-inch tablet you need it now, and you need it cheap the Archos 101 is not a bad way to go.

Unlike most of the Android tablets weve seen in the aftermath of the iPad, the Archos 101 looks really good next tablet from Apple. Similar size at about 10.5 inches wide, 6 inches high and 0.33 inches thick, the Archos 101 feels like a real tablet not an oversized smartphone.
ARCHOS 101 TabletThe first thing you notice about the Archos 101 is how light it is. At about 16 grams, it weighs about the same as a pint of beer and is noticeably lighter than the iPad. How Archos was able to achieve this light weight is no secret, though. Instead of aluminum and glass construction used on the iPad, the Archos design and construction is mostly plastic bends easily under pressure. True, tablets are relatively fragile devices inherently, but the 101 wins no points for robustness.

Another design detail that experienced Android users will notice is the Archos 101's lack of tactile navigation buttons. Perhaps Googles prediction of a move of all navigation buttons to the touch screen in Android 3.0, Archos has adapted Android 2.2 with on-screen buttons for home, back, menu, run the right of the screen. The end result is really ideal for tablets, as the navigation buttons to refocus, whatever the device is held.
new ARCHOS 101 TabletArchos is also a little out of Android script when it comes to connectivity. For better or worse, all of the 101 ports are crowded on the left edge of the device and, boy, there are a lot of ports. You get standard connections for headphones, an AC adapter and a Micro USB port for syncing with a computer. Archos also throws in a mini-HDMI port for output to a TV and a standard USB host port for connecting an external keyboard or thumb drive.

Also on the Archos 101 is a front-facing camera that both video and photos can shoot at VGA resolution (640480 pixels). Fring a video chat application is installed that will work with the camera, along with the pinhole microphone found on the same side.

A kick stand is also included, located on the back. The stand folds from the middle and folds out far enough to prop up the tablet in a lightweight (30-degree) angle, which helps with touch-screen typing, but can also be used to the tablet upright to keep videos or a photo slideshow.

So much software goes, youre looking at a device Android 2.2, minus the comforts of their own apps from Google, including Android Marketplace, Google Mail and Maps. You get the stock Android 2.2 e-mail app and browser, along with remixed versions Archos of the Android music player, photo viewer and video player.

As a gesture of peace project, Archos offers its own App Store called AppsLib, for those looking to go through the motions. As we have noted in previous Archos tablet reviews, the content is just not there. Its like a journey through a flea market. There are plenty of knockoffs and hastily produced games and demos, but the brand names are not around.

What are the interesting hardware features. The Archos 101 has no cellular connectivity or GPS, but you get 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a few rare features that can win over some. For example, you get a full-sizeUSB port that supports attached keyboards and thumbdrives. You will not find on a high-end Android Galaxy Tab tablet and Samsung, and certainly not on the iPad. There is also a mini-HDMI port on the screen to view mirrors on a TV perfect for playing videos or show off websites.

Of course, not all of the specs are the winners. Despite the IPAD-like size, 101-screen has a poor viewing angle, limited brightness and a 1,024 x600-pixel resolution that does not meet its high-definition video playback capabilities. Video output via an HDMI cable (not supplied) maxes out at a decent 720p HD. Another disappointment is the lack of full support for Adobe Flash 10. Its a complaint we make about tablets twice the price of the Archos 101 but whatever you think you will buy, it is frustrating to come across broken Flash player while browsing the web.

Conclusion

The Archos 101 Android 2.2 tablet is not the fastest, smartest and most impressive tablet weve seen. Its big and cheap, and Android provides core functionality with a few bells and whistles (HDMI, USB host), but for the most part is an obsolete instrument with a limited use for Web browsing and e-mail.

Cydle M7 MutiPAD Tablet review and specifications

M7 Cydle Android MutiPAD is a 7-inch tablet with a stand that can be removed. You can use it to watch a video or to surf the web. The FCC has also issued guidelines of use, some test results, and information pertaining to these tablets.

M7 Cydle is promised out in the second quarter of 2010 with $ 199 or 1.8 million rupiah (if converted) equipped with ATSC TV tuner. Previously there has never been a TV tuner like that. TV tuner will be described on the product page and use guidelines.

M7 Tablet Cydle memilliki CPU 800 MHz ARM11 CPU, 8GB of storage, 256MB RAM, and 7-inch screen, touch screen display with 800 x 480 pixels. This product is run on the Google Android OS 2.1, has a G-sensor, HDMI port, speakers, mic, and inputs for headphones, and also supports 1080p HD video output.

On the product page explained that this tablet has a 4000mAh battery, but its capacity 4500mAh. Both indicate that the battery can not be exchanged.

Samsung SPH-P9000 Review and Specs

The SPH-P9000 is an EV-DO (3G CDMA) device with WiMAX (802.16) support, which means that the SPH-P9000 had high-speed data access wherever it can get a WiMAX or EV-DO signal.

Its a hefty beast, weighing 560 grams (1lb 2oz in old money), and it measures 143x92x30mm (5.6 x 3.5 x 1.2 inches). Theres a novel folding keyboard, and the main display is a 5? 800480 pixel unit, and theres a 1.3 megapixel camera facing the user. Internal storage consists of a 30Gb hard disk and the SGH-P9000 has Bluetooth too.

Samsung say that the SPH-P9000 runs Windows XP, presumably the special Windows XP Tablet Edition used of UMPC (Project Origami) devices. Samsung arent touting the SPH-P9000 as a UMPC handheld, but the specification is close enough. The inclusion of WiMAX and EV-DO directly into the device is unusual though, and it adds to the SPH-P9000's desirability.

Samsung SPH-P9000 Review and Specs

The Samsung SPH-P9000 does actually make voice calls, so to that extent it is also a mobile phone. But really, its a handheld computer with integrated telephony and mobile network connections, rather than a device like the HTC Universal which is a scaled-up phone.

The keyboard folds up when not in use, so the SPH-P9000 can be used like a more traditional tablet PC.

As it stands, the SPH-P9000 is a Korea-only device and it wont work in most other marketplaces where GSM and UMTS are the only network carriers. However, the WiMAX and EV-DO connectivity is only a small part of the overall technology in the SPH-P9000, so we could well be seeing devices like this in the rest of the world sometimg in 2007 or 2008.
